”Easy to joke about life in Sweden”

Lund.
Tonight is the opening night of Lund's first comedy club - in English.

– It is easy to joke about life in Sweden and all the cultural clashes, says Joe Eagan, comedian from Canada and founder of the club.

Two years ago, Joe Eagan started arranging comedy nights for students at Västgöta Nation. The show was in English and the target audience was exchange students. Now he has taken the concept one step further and arranges regular shows in Malmö and Copenhagen.

Tonight for the first time he arranges a comedy night that everybody in Lund can attend. The club is called Wise Cracker’s English Comedy Club and it is based in Restaurant Spisen, with the help of events promotor Party Tonic.

– The exchange students love it and I have discovered that even Swedes appreciate something different like stand-up in English, says Joe Eagan. He has invited four other comedians to the opening night.

And you don’t have to have English as your first language to understand the jokes. Joe Eagan usually tells the comedians not to talk too fast, or to be too abstract.

– At the second show I hired a British comedian from south London who talked really fast. Nobody understood a thing – not even people from England in the audience. That wasn’t a great success, so now I ask everyone to talk clearly.

Wise Cracker’s English Comedy Club opens tonight at Spisen, showtime 7 pm. The comedians then move on to Västgöta Nation where the club is open for students, showtime 9.30 pm. A student card is compulsory there.
